The Power of Images

Images can reveal cancer cells and visualize learning processes or environmental degradation. They can simulate the birth of galaxies, analyze how AI-generated images are used, and paint a picture of what ancient Rome may have looked like. The latest UZH Magazin shines a light on the many ways in which UZH researchers are using images to generate knowledge.

Images play a crucial role in science and research. They help researchers understand the world and gain new insights. At UZH, researchers from various disciplines use imaging technology, visual analyses and simulations to investigate biological processes, cosmic events and cultural shifts, among other things. The latest UZH Magazin explores the use of images in their work and the insights they gain.

We present how cutting-edge biological and medical research uses advanced microscopy and imaging techniques to study cells and brain tissue, providing new insights into diseases such as cancer and improving treatments. We explain how researchers leverage AI to analyze increasingly complex and vast datasets. And we explore some of the methods applied by UZH researchers across various fields – from history and media studies to environmental sciences. This enables them to study ecosystems, reconstruct historical scenes and critically examine how images shape our perception.

As always, the magazine also covers additional topics, including a look back at 500 years of theology in Zurich, the evolution of complex life, and an interview on the role of uncertainty in our lives. A selection of articles will be published on our website in English over the coming weeks. We hope you enjoy reading them!
